The first White Elephant Surplus Store was opened in Spokane in 1946, by John Conley, Sr. At that time, the store sold mainly army surplus items. The store soon added more general merchandise and in just a few years, the White Elephant became the area's favorite discount toy and sporting goods store. In 1976, a second store was opened in the Spokane Valley. Reference: whiteelephantstores.com
