My favorite drive is leaving 2 hours before sunset and traveling from St Maries to Avery on the St Joe River Road. The views are spectacular of the St Joe River as it winds through the expansive valleys and mountains. Locals here call it the Switzerland of the United States. Many early swiss settled in this valley and still operate working ranches. The "Porrett" family was one of the Swiss settler families. My grandfather -Doc Miller-was a good friend of the Porretts and was outraged in the 1970's when the Forest Service renamed this lake from Porrett Lake to Turtle Lake. He wrote a poem of protest about a name change made by a federal government office without any input from the local families that named the lake. Out of respect for their history, I named this painting Porrett Lake.
